Investigation of Focusing Wave Properties in a Numerical Wave Tank with a Fully Nonlinear Potential Flow Model

Abstract: Nonlinear wave interactions and superpositions among the different wave components and wave groups in a random sea sometimes produce rogue waves with extremely large wave heights that appear unexpectedly. A good understanding of the generation and evolution of such extreme wave events is of great importance for the analysis of wave forces on marine structures. A fully nonlinear potential flow (FNPF) model is proposed in the presented paper to investigate the different factors that influence the wave focusing l… Show more

“…Also, the complication of solving for two-phase fluid flows in OpenFOAM may be a source of error that should not be factored out. To confirm these findings and be able to identify credibly the sources of the errors, other suitable solvers can be used that employ similar equations and modelling approaches as these of the present work [66,67].…”

“…Previous research [19] shows that 10 cells in the vertical direction is usually sufficient to represent steep waves using REEF3D::FNPF. Therefore 10 cells are arranged vertically in the current study, .…”

“…REEF3D::FNPF inherits all the high-order numerical schemes and high performance computation capacity. The model has also been used to investigate steep focused waves [19]. In the presented paper, several considerations regarding the choice of the vertical grid structure and horizontal resolution for irregular waves are discussed to ensure a good representation of wave spectrum in the numerical wave model.…”

“…The new numerical wave model FNPF of REEF3D solves the Laplace equation for the flow potential and the nonlinear kinematic and dynamics free surface boundary conditions [15]. Very promising results in the reproduction of experimental regular and bi-chromatics wave with constant water depth as well as with complex bottom topology have been presented with the open-source hydrodynamic model REEF3D::FNPF in [16] and [17].…”
