Investigation of efficiency in the UK hotel industry: a network data envelopment analysis approach

Abstract: Purpose This paper aims to investigate efficiency in the UK hotel industry and further evaluate the impacts of hotel characteristics and industry environment on efficiency. Design/methodology/approach The network data envelopment (DEA) weak link approach is used for the efficiency analysis, while the determinants of efficiency are evaluated by bootstrapped truncated regression. Findings The findings show that the UK hotel industry is very inefficient. The results of overall efficiency deconstruction show t… Show more

“…This research argued the hotel efficiency scores would not deteriorate when hotel managers practice a sound RM during low-demand periods. Consequently, the hotel efficiency factor is operationalized in this research as a multi-dimension aspect of efficiency metrics similar to previous approaches (Hu et al, 2010;Mhlanga, 2018;Tan and Despotis, 2021;Zaki and Qoura, 2019). Frontier techniques measure the best-performed hotels using numerous inputs/outputs of each hotel as a "Decision-Making Unit (DMU)."…”

“…In order to reduce this effect, the metal coverage area of the antenna can be reduced; that is, the value of series capacitance can be reduced by digging out a rectangular slot. However, this method also increases the flow path of the current on the antenna surface, that is, increases the inductance [28]. In order to weaken this effect, insert a metal patch in the middle of the rectangular slot, and the metal patch is coupled at the upper and lower ends to generate reverse current, which reduces the inductance of the patch antenna and causes the effect of frequency rise.…”

“…Hsieh and Lin (2010) and Huang et al (2014) further evaluated those indices for occupancy and catering divisions. Chiu and Huang (2011), Huang et al (2016), Oukil and Al‐Zidi (2018), and Tan and Despotis (2021) used multistage DEA to assess operation efficiency and profitability in the hotel industry. An intertemporal framework was also applied to assess the dynamic performance of the hotel industry.…”
