Investigation of effective parameters on surface roughness in thermomechanical tube spinning process

Abstract: Tube spinning process is recognized as an effective process for fabricating of thin wall cylindrical parts, with precision tolerances, high surface quality and desired mechanical property. In this research, the influences of major parameters of thermomechanical tube spinning process such as preform thickness, percentage of thickness reduction, mandrel rotational speed, feed rate of rollers, solution treatment time and aging treatment time on surface roughness for fabricating of 2024 aluminum spun tubes using d… Show more

“…Tube spinning can be divided into forward and backward spinning, depending on the relative directions of roller feed and material flow. 1,2 For forward tube spinning, material flows in the same direction as that of roller feed, with advantages including good fittability, high wall thickness reduction, small build-up and bulging. But blank length of this method is restricted by slide stroke and mandrel length.…”

“…Tube spinning process has been studied by several researchers. Fazeli and Ghoreishi, 2,3 Haghshenas et al 4 and Yao and Makoto 5 analyzed the effects of key process parameters on surface roughness, wall thickness variation and internal diameter growth based on experimental data. Jahazi and Ebrahimi, 6 Murata et al, 7 Su et al 8 and Kuboki et al 9 carried out experiments to investigate the effects of temperature and initial thickness deviation on roller force, spinning feasibility and elimination of spinning defects.…”

“…The accuracy of flow formed shell largely depends on the selection of process parameters. Several studies [34][35][36][37] have been carried out in the past to identify the role of those settings on the accuracy of the flow formed products. Need for considering these parameters has been briefed below.…”

“…Further, they have observed an increase in diameter growth with an increase in thickness reduction. Some researchers [37] concluded that better surface finish in Aluminum 2024 tubes is obtained due to higher percentage of thickness reduction, increase in solution and ageing treatment time, less feed rate and minor speed of the mandrel.…”

“…Surface quality (Fazeli and Ghoreishi, 2009), specific materials (Xu et al, 2005), and the geometric parameters (Fazeli and Ghoreishi, 2011) in the metal spinning process have been investigated using experiments and statistical principles. Experimental methods have high costs, restrictive conditions, detection limits, and many significant issues in the forming process.…”
