Residual stresses are inherent stresses that exist in engineering components even though no external load is applied. They are caused by the non-uniform volumetric shift of the metallic component during manufacturing processes. Welding is a key manufacturing technique that has a substantial impact on the economy since it is required for the production of a diverse variety of products used in the engineering sector. The residual stress primarily affects the stability, durability and performance of the welded joints. Hence its determination is of utmost importance. X-ray diffraction (XRD) is the most commonly used method for residual stress analysis. There are mainly two approaches for measuring residual stress using XRD; one is the sin2ψ method and the other is the cosα method. The residual stress measurements using the cosα method are handy, quick and convenient compared to the sin2ψ method. This method is well suited for welded joints, as it provides flexibility for testing immediately after the welding operation. Apart from residual stress measurements, the cosα method also gives valuable insights in the form of Debye-Scherrer (DS) rings and full width at half maximum. The present study focuses on the development of a novel technique that not only enables residual stress measurement but also provides a quantitative estimation of hardness and qualitative estimation of grain size without performing metallurgical or mechanical characterization. The material used for the present study is an arc-welded joint of MDN 250 grade maraging steel. The residual stress results show a compressive profile throughout the weldment, with a maximum value of compressive residual stress of 428 MPa at the fusion zone.

Various industries extensively use the high-velocity oxy-fuel coating technique due to its superior quality, cost-effectiveness, flexibility and convenience for use. The present research distinguishes the high-temperature corrosion characteristics of high-velocity oxy-fuel coated NiCrMoNb and Cr3C2-25NiCr powder on X8CrNiMoVNb16-13 alloy. The oxidation and hot corrosion characteristics of X8CrNiMoVNb16-13 alloy were evaluated through the air and molten salt condition (60% V2O5 + 40% Na2SO4) for 50 cycles at a temperature of 900°C. Thermogravimetric measurement was performed to evaluate the weight gain square of coated and uncoated substrates. Vickers hardness, thickness, porosity and microstructure of the coating were analysed. The metallurgical integrity of the corrosion product is evaluated through scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis. The laminar structure was observed in the coated region. Also, the dense microstructure with maximum porosity of 0.66% was observed, and the thickness of both the coatings was similar. The Cr3C2-25NiCr coating (766 ± 11 HV0.3) showed higher Vickers hardness than NiCrMoNb (377 ± 10 HV0.3). The occurrence of Cr2O3, NiFe2O4 and NiCr2O4 increased the corrosion resistance in both molten salts and air oxidation environments. The development of Fe2O3 in NiCrMoNb coating increases the weight gain when exposed to the molten salt condition. The present research recommended that Cr3C2-25NiCr coating can be used for the molten salt condition, whereas NiCrMoNb can be used for air oxidation application.

In this paper, a double pulse gas metal arc welding (DP-GMAW) for an AA6061-T6 aluminum alloy based on fewer basic welding parameters than the traditional DP-GMAW is proposed. This study compared the difference in pulse base currents (ΔIb) and the difference in the pulse peak currents (ΔIp) by analyzing the electrical signal and morphology properties of welded samples. The results indicated that changing ΔIp caused welding defects or even welding failure easily. The welding stability after changing ΔIb was much better than that after changing ΔIp. The individual fish-scale width of the weld joint remained unchanged when ΔIb was at different values. In addition, the average absorbed work, tensile strength, yield strength and elongation of the weld joints obtained by different ΔIb values reached 31.1%, 60.2%, 52.9% and 37.9% of the base metal, respectively.
