Investigation of Different Storage Systems for Solar-Driven Organic Rankine Cycle

Abstract: The objective of the present work is the study of different thermal storage systems for a solar-fed organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system that operates with parabolic trough collectors. The conventional design with sensible thermal oil storage is compared with a storage configuration with thermal oil and ceramic rocks, as well as the use of latent storage with phase change materials (PCMs) is investigated. The initial system is studied parametrically, and it is properly designed to order for the cycle to have hig… Show more

“…The properties of liquid density (ρ l ) and enthalpy (∆h l ) were determined using the CoolProp library [64,65], taking the density at the average temperature (T h + T c )/2. As for the void fraction, its value has been estimated in the order of those used by [59,62,66,67]. Density (ρ s ) and heat capacity (c s ) values for the solid filler have also been chosen according to [66].…”

“…Although the direct design had better yearly efficiency and output power than the indirect, the indirect configuration had a more considerable annual heat stored by the PCM and a higher capacity factor. Bellos et al 24 investigated the influence of three different TESs on the PTC‐driven solar‐ORC. Compared to sensible thermal oils and thermal oil‐ceramic pebbles, the PCM acquired 13.97% and 128.66k€ thermal and net present value (NPV), respectively.…”

“…Rafique et al 3 presented a comprehensive analysis of the perspective of solar energy and its potential in Pakistan. Bellos et al 4 utilized parabolic trough collectors to study different systems for thermal storage of solar-fed organic Rankine cycle systems. Solar energy is stimulated by introducing a multiple-effect boiling evaporator by Kalogirou 5 as it is decided as the most appropriate scheme for solar energy.…”
