Investigation of different approaches for exhaled breath and tumor tissue analyses to identify lung cancer biomarkers

Abstract: Development of early noninvasive methods for lung cancer diagnosis is among the most promising technologies, especially using exhaled breath as an object of analysis. Simple sample collection combined with easy and quick sample preparation, as well as the long-term stability of the samples, make it an ideal choice for routine analysis. The conditions of exhaled breath analysis by preconcentrating volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in sorbent tubes, two-stage thermal desorption and gas-chromatographic determinat… Show more

“…Although we did not find any literature reporting the relations of this pathway and lung cancer incidence, toluene and xylene are confirmed to be risk factor of lung cancer [ 28 , 29 ]. Additionally, they have been detected in exhaled breath [ 30 ], especially they were reported as lung cancer markers in exhaled breath in a series of papers [ 31–34 ]. But many aromatic VOCs were also reported as results of cigarettes exposure [ 35 ], which made it doubtful whether they can be available lung cancer markers.…”

“…For instance, gastroscopy, laryngoscopy, and coronary angiography are used for gastric cancer (GCa), lung cancer (LC), and myocardial infraction diagnosis, respectively [ 1 ]. Other commonly used methods, such as computed tomography [ 2 ] or mammography, used for breast cancer (BC) [ 3 ], may also be harmful due to radiation exposure. As a result, patient compliance and utilization of such diagnostic methods are remarkably reduced for a significant part of the population.…”
