Investigation of Desert Dust Contribution to Source Apportionment of PM10 and PM2.5 from a Southern Mediterranean Coast

Abstract: In order to identify the source apportionment of particulate matter PM 10 and PM 2.5 in the southern Mediterranean coast of Tunis (Tunisia), three different sites characterized respectively by traffic, industries and being an urban background area are studied. The chemical characterization included a gravimetric determination of atmospheric particles mass concentration, measurements of the major anions (SO 4 2-, NO 3 -, Cl -) and cations (Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , K + , NH 4 + ) concentrations in the aerosol samples by … Show more

“…Time series variations in the concentrations of ionic species (Na + , NH4 + , K + , Mg 2+ , Ca 2+ , SO4 2− , NO2 − , NO3 − , Cl − ) are shown in Figure 4a. Here, the concentrations of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonates were calculated as the soluble (sol) fractions of Ca and Mg and were added to the calculated CO3 2− concentrations [21]. The CO3 2− was calculated using Equation (1):…”

“…where EF sea is the enrichment indicator of a given ion in the precipitation relative to the ion in the sea; X is the ion in the precipitation; (X / Na + ) precipitation represents the ratio of components in the precipitation; and (X / Na + ) sea denotes the ratio of components in the sea (Keene et al, 1986;Turekian, 1968). The EF value of an ion in the precipitation relative to the corresponding ion in the soil was calculated following Eq.…”

“…Factor 3 occupied 9.54% of the total variance and was dominated by Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , and K + . The former two ions were considered to be the important indicators of crustal origin or windblown dust source, which were commonly stored in soils and dusts (Kchih et al, 2015). K + was also observed in urban fugitive dusts, although it was generally considered as an important fingerprint of biomass burning (Shen et al, 2016).…”
