Investigation of cutting methods for small samples of Hayabusa and future sample return missions

Abstract: Abstract-We report the investigation of cutting methods for Hayabusa samples. The purpose of our study is to explore the possibility of applying multiple analyses to a single particle effectively. We investigated the cutting performance of a blade dicing saw, laser, focused ion beam (FIB), and physical breaking by microindenter. Cutting performance was examined by estimating the aspect ratio of the cut slit, i.e., depth over width of the slit. We also investigated the possible contamination and sample damage b… Show more

“…Larger samples (>~2 mm) can be mounted in epoxy, or if friability is not a factor, cut directly using a wire saw or cut‐off saw, as has been done for lunar samples and meteorites. The saw kerf (loss of material during a cut) will be minimized by using either the cut‐off saw or wire saw, depending on the nature of the sample and the desire to precisely control the location of the cut (Uesugi et al., 2014). Saw fines will be recovered and preserved for study.…”

“…Regions of interest (ROIs) inside the sample can be found through synchrotron-based 3D-CT and XRD analyses. Prior to conducting a series of microanalyses, we used an FIB to extract the ROIs based on a 3D characterization of the sample (Uesugi et al 2014b).…”
