“…Figure 9 shows that split injection does not improve stability compared to single injection. Stability improvement has been observed in prior work done on split injection [4] with very late injection. (In [4], secondary injection took place in the expansion stroke overlapping with the spark event.…”

“…Stability improvement has been observed in prior work done on split injection [4] with very late injection. (In [4], secondary injection took place in the expansion stroke overlapping with the spark event. In our experiment, the engine would not operate reliably at such late injection.)…”

“…A lot of studies on cycle-to-cycle variation of combustion with spark-ignition (SI) engines under cold-start condition have been conducted. 1420 At cold start of an engine, ignition timing is substantially retarded to expansion stroke from Minimum spark advance for best torque (MBT). Russ et al 15 described that the primary cause of cycle-to-cycle variation of indicated mean effective pressure (IMEP) is variations in the combustion phasing (location of 50% mass fraction burned) under the retarded ignition condition.…”

“…The main purpose of the split injection is to keep rich mixture close to the spark plug by the SI timing by controlling the second injection of fuel. 18 Chen et al 19 and Twiney et al 20 analyzed an initial phase of combustion by optical measurements and concluded that misfire (here, this is failure of SI) in the spray guided combustion was induced by high-speed flow close to the spark plug and wetting by liquid fuel. The results obtained in these studies are effective for an engine design and optimization of combustion; however, the mechanism of cycle-to-cycle variation of combustion still remains unclear due to the lack of quantitative data of in-cylinder phenomena.…”
