This paper describes the characteristics of the temperature and pressure fields measured downstream of the launcher of the Russian "FAGOT" anti-tank missile system. The experimental data were used to establish the proper location of the launcher on a vehicle used by the Greek Army.The pressure field developing at the rear of the missile launcher has the characteristics of a conical shock wave. The field was measured with an array of piezoelectric pressure transducers and a fast computer-based data acquisition system. The extent of the temperature field was established with high speed video and infra-red still photography and was confirmed with miniature thermocouple sensors.The results showed that the pressure cone intersects the ground level at a distance of 1.5 to 2.5 m behind the launcher. Typical overpressure of the shock wave was of the order of 1 to 1.8 bar. The conical shock wave breaks down into several smaller shock waves at a distance of 3 m and extends up to 15 m behind the launcher. The diameter of the cone at this location is 2.5-3.0 m.

Miindungsfeuer und Blastwellen bei Rohrwaffen Blastbzw. Knallwellen und Leuchtphanomene bei Rohrwaffen sind von Bedeutung, da sie mit verhaltnismal3ig gro5en Uberdriicken und intensiven Miindungsfeuer verbunden sind. Nur etwa 30% der in Treibladungen vorhandenen chemischen Energie wird in kinetische Energie des beschleunigten Projektils umgesetzt. Die verbleibende Energie ist vor allem in den in wenigen Millisekunden von der Waffenmundung abstromenden Gasen enthalten. Ihre schlagartige Freisetzung erzeugt die Blastwelle, da die umgebende Luft plotzlich verdriingt wird. AuSerdem enthalten diese Gase brennstoffreiche Anteile, die mit turbulent zugefiihrter Auaenluft vermischt werden. Die Verbrennung dieser Gasmischung erzeugt das Mundungsfeuer (Miindungsblitz). Die Auslegung des Treibstoffes, der innenballistischen Leistung, der Mundungsbremsen oder Miindungsaufsatze und der chemischen Mittel zur Unterdruckung des Mundungsfeuers mu8 sich an dem Ziel orientieren, diese Gefahren in sicheren Grenzen zu halten. Nachfolgend werden die Blast-und Miindungsfeuer-Phanomene kurz beschrieben und dabei neuere Forschungsergebnisse zugrunde gelegt sowie illustrative Beispiele gezeigt. Environ 30% seulement de I'knergie chimique d'une charge propulsive sont transformks en tnergie cinktique pour ac&lCrer le projectile. Le reste se retrouve essentiellement dans les gaz de combustion qui sont eject& en quelques millisecondes a la bouche du tube. Leur detente brutale donne naissance a une onde de compression qui se propage dans I'air ambiant. Par ailleurs ces gaz contiennent des composants combustibles qui, sous I'effet des turbulences, se mefangent a I'air ambiant. La combustion de ce mklange engendre la lueur de bouche. La conception de la charge propulsive, les performances de balistique intkrieure, les freins de bouche ou manchons Cquipant le tube ainsi que les additifs antilueurs cherchent a attknuer ces phknomtnes et A limiter les risques qu'ils impliquent. SummaryGun muzzle blast and flash phenomena are of importance since they are associated with the formation of large overpressures and intense muzzle flash. About 30% of the chemical energy released from the propellant used in a conventional gun is converted into kinetic energy of the projectile. The remaining energy is mainly contained in the propellant gas-particle mixture which escapes from the muzzle of the gun in a few milliseconds. The sudden discharge produces a blast wave because of the rapid displacement of air originally surrounding the 'gun.
