Investigation of Combined SVC and TCSC versus IPFC in Enhancing Power System Static Security

Abstract: Electrical power systems are often required to operate at full loading capacity due to ever increasing demand and transmission line contingencies with limited grid expansion. This results in line overload and operating near system limit, thereby threatening system security. Utilization of existing system can be achieved using Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS) devices without violating system limits. This research investigation involves static security assessment of a modelled IEEE 30-bus… Show more

“…Moreover, the optimal location of distribution static synchronous compensator (DSTATCOM) to improve VSI is presented in [4]. In addition, the impacts of flexible alternating current transmission system (FACTS) devices that are used in transmission system on enhancement the VSI are examined in [5], [6]. On the other hand, the distributed generation (DG) concept [7] has been emerged to fulfill the increase in load demand.…”

“…FACTS devices use static equipment to transmit AC electrical power, by boosting the network's controllability and power transmission capacity; they are based on power electronics [33]. Figure 3 illustrates several types of FACTS controllers which are classified as series-connected controllers, shunt-connected controllers, combined series-shuntconnected controllers, and combined series-series-connected controllers [34].…”

“…In the other part of the paper, a placement problem is presented for IPFC to best effect on the SSA problem. The same placement problem has been presented in Reference 89 but different devices such as IPFC, Static VAR Compensator, and thyristor controlled series compensator have been considered. A numerical method named Sequential Quadratic Programming has been used for optimization.…”
