Investigation of Coherent Optical Multiband DFT-S OFDM in Long Haul Transmission

Abstract: Multiband discrete Fourier transform spread (DFT-S) is a promising technology to reduce peak-to-average power ratio and mitigate the fiber nonlinearity. We investigate DFT-S coherent optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) in terms of computational complexity and nonlinearity. With the nonlinearity improvement, 450-Gb/s twoband DFT-S CO-OFDM outperforms conventional CO-OFDM, and is successfully transmitted over a 9280-km fiber link.Index Terms-Coherent optical orthogonal frequency division… Show more

“…In order to improve DSP efficiency, a subbanded CD equalizer has been proposed for single carrier systems where each subband is individually dispersion compensated [7]. Multi-band DFTS (MB-DFTS) OFDM equalization was introduced to realize sub-band CD equalization by allocating a sufficiently large guard interval to reduce the CD equalizer complexity [8]. MB-DFTS OFDM is essentially a single carrier frequency multiplexing (SC-FDM) technique with frequency domain equalization (FDE).…”

“…In the RoF systems especially the reverse modulation system, nonlinearity also exists in the fiber transmission, so reducing the impact of the PAPR is a challenge for the designed system. The DFT-Spread technology can be used to reduce the PAPR of the OFDM signal, so that multicarrier modulated OFDM signal can show the characteristics of single-carrier modulated signals [16]. Figure 2 shows the principle of the DFT-Spread OFDM signal generation and recovery.…”

“…In the experimental demonstration, the coherent optical orthogonal frequency 16.7 [6] DFT-S PDM-8PSK OFDM C, L 25 2240 SSMF Raman 2012 63 [7] PDM- 16QAM-OFDM C, L 25 160 SSMF Raman 2013 100.3 [8] DFT division multiplexing (CO-OFDM) with discrete Fourier transform spreading (DFT-S) and 128-QAM format was applied. It is noted that DFT-S can reduce the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and mitigate the fiber nonlinearity [9,10] . After C-and L-band transmission over an 80 km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) at International Telecommunication Union Telecommunication (ITU-T) standardized 25 GHz channel spacing, the SE can be as high as 10.7 bit/s/Hz.…”
