Medicinal plants as therapeutic options for topical treatment in canine dermatology? A systematic review

Background Medicinal plants have been used traditionally since centuries for wound care and treatment of skin diseases both in human and animals. Skin diseases are one of the most common reasons for owners to take their dog to the veterinarian. The demands for treatment and prophylaxis of these diseases are broad. A wide range of bacteria including antibiotic-resistant bacteria can be involved, making the treatment challenging and bear an anthropo-zoonotic potential. The aim of this review is to systematically evaluate based on recent scientific literature, the potential of four medicinal plants to enrich the therapeutic options in pyoderma, canine atopic dermatitis, otitis externa, wounds and dermatophytosis in dogs. Results Based on four books and a survey among veterinarians specialized in phytotherapy, four medicinal plants were chosen as the subject of this systematic review: Calendula officinalis L. (Marigold) , Hypericum perforatum L. agg. (St. John’s Wort) , Matricaria chamomilla L. (syn. Matricaria recutita L., Chamomile) and Salvia officinalis L. (Sage). According to the PRISMA statement through literature research on two online databases a total of 8295 publications was screened and narrowed down to a final 138 publications for which full-text documents were analyzed for its content resulting in a total of 145 references (21 clinical, 24 in vivo and 100 in vitro references). Conclusions All four plants were proven to have antibacterial and antifungal effects of a rather broad spectrum including antibiotic-resistant bacteria. This makes them an interesting new option for the treatment of pyoderma, otitis externa, infected wounds and dermatophytosis. Marigold, St. John’s Wort and Chamomile showed wound-healing properties and are thus promising candidates in line to fill the therapeutic gap in canine wound-healing agents. St. John’s Wort and Chamomile also showed anti-inflammatory and other beneficial effects on healthy skin. Due to the wide range of beneficial effects of these medicinal plants, they should be taken into account for the treatment of dermatologic diseases in dogs at least in future clinical research. The objective of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of topically applied coe nzyme Q10 (CoQ10) (ubiquinol) for wound healing in rats with experimentally induced burn injuries. A total of 27 rats were divided into three groups, and administered general anesthesia. No further intervention was performed for Group 1 (Control). Hot water (95°C) was applied to rats in Groups 2 and 3 for 10 seconds. The rats in Group 2 received silver sulfadiazine, whereas those in Group 3 received topical CoQ10. Biopsy samples were obtained at days 3 and 10. In the group treated with CoQ10 (Group 3), there was no statistically significant difference among between Days 3 and 10 in terms of inflammation and epidermal/vascular/collagen damage. In terms of edema, there was a statistically significant distinction among the CoQ10 group (Group 3) at Day 10 and the silver sulfadiazine group (Group 2) at Day 3. In terms of oxygen radicals, there was a statistically meaningful difference among the CoQ10 group and the silver sulfadiazine group at Day 10. This investigation did not demonstrate a beneficial role of treatment with CoQ10 for the healing of burn wounds for most parameters. But in the long term (10 day); immunohistochemical analysis performed to determine edema and oxidative stress showed that treatment with CoQ10 reduced the levels of oxygen radicals in biopsies. The limitation of our study is that the duration is limited to 10 days. For this reason longer term studies were required.

The measures of epidermal thickness and number of vessels demonstrated that HP administered four times a day within the first 24 h is clearly effective in wound healing in the experimental thermal second-degree burn and is significantly superior to SS treatment [105]. models showed remarkable wound-healing activity [106].…”

Many plants or plant-derived compounds with high levels of antioxidants and antiinflammatory, immunomodulatory, and antimicrobial properties could be of great benefit for wound healing. Several studies have documented the use of plant extracts for the development of bioactive wound dressings. The purpose of this chapter is to give an update about the vegetal and bee products, which can be used as bioactive substances in wound dressings or in other formulations for wound healing. The adverse effects of plant and bee extracts, such as contact allergies, are also presented. In order to better exploit the huge reservoir of pharmacologically active plant-derived compounds and extracts, standardized methodology and clinical trials are necessary to give more concrete evidence supporting the use of traditional medicine in wound management.
