Investigation of a TiO 2 photocatalyst immobilized with poly(vinyl alcohol)

Abstract: Immobilization of TiO2 photocatalyst was realized with application of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA). However, these PVA-based foils were too instable to be used for photocatalytic water cleaning. Their stability could be significantly enhanced by a thermal treatment, but this procedure generated various water-soluble derivatives such as aldehydes, ketones, and aromatic species. Photocatalytic pre-treatment of the foils proved to be suitable to remove these products from the surface of the composite. After three su… Show more

“…Titania is a highly effective photoactive material, with great promise in the fields of photocatalysts, solar cells, etc. [1][2][3][4][5] For many applications it can be a great advantage to use TiO 2 in coating form: e.g. in air-and water purification via photocatalytic means, coatings offer easier separation of the photocatalyst from the polluted fluid and a more manageable system compared 82 to other forms (i.e.…”

“…22 Nevertheless, there existed few reports with respect to employing pure TiO 2 NPs in industrial effluents purification owing to the challenge of recovery of powdered TiO 2 NPs after wastewater treatment. 23,24 To immobilize TiO 2 NPs in various substrates is an effective approach to avoid the problem. 25 PVA, as a semi-crystalline hydrophilic polymer with good chemical and thermal stability, is a highly biocompatible, hydrophilic, non-toxic, low cost and easily processed polymer.…”

“…The reduction of a specific surface area would have a negative impact on the ability to remove contaminants. Another essential aspect of the immobilization process is the final crystalline structure of the photocatalyst on a carrier [13][14][15][16].…”
