Investigation of a new concept of hydrogen supply for a spark-ignition engine

Abstract: The article presents the results of conceptual and research works of an internal combustion engine adapted for hydrogen supply. The engine was equipped with a direct injection of hydrogen into the combustion chamber, allowing the control of the heat release rate. The developed concept of the power supply system and the fuel injection strategy were presented. Initial results of bench tests were also presented.

“…NO 2 is a globally regulated air pollutant that is harmful to one's health and which, in turn, contributes to photochemical ozone pollution and particulate matter (PM2.5). [Stępień et al 2021, Stępień 2021, Brzeżański et al 2013.…”

“…However, there is a risk that the adoption of hydrogen as a combustion fuel, if not properly managed, may lead to some unintended consequences due to the co-emission of harmful NOx. Ciniviz and Brzeżański in the articles [Ciniviz et al 2012, Brzeżański et al 2013 Thanks to the dilution effect, EGR effectively reduces NOx emissions, where the oxygen concentration in the intake decreases. Furthermore, a significant decrease in volumetric efficiency is observed as EGR rates increase (reductions of approximately 15% are noted compared to dual-fuel hydrogen without EGR).…”

It is also considered to apply direct injection system in the future as it gives better results in real conditions tests [4]. In the space of the preliminary chamber, the volume of which Possible applications of prechambers in hydrogen internal combustion engines is assumed to be a few percent of the volume of the main chamber, integrated with the cylinder head, the ignition of the stoichiometric or lean mixture is initiated.…”
