“…Therefore, the indication for PEG should be carefully determined. We have recently reported on risk factors for complications, problems and earlier mortality after PEG 9,10,18 . Similarly, predictive factors for postoperative oral feeding provide useful information for determining the indications for PEG.…”

“…To analyze predictive factors for postoperative oral feeding, we selected 33 candidates based on: (i) basic information of the patient; (ii) clinical symptoms or diseases leading to PEG; (iii) results of blood examination before PEG; and (iv) complications and disease history (Table 1). To select candidates based on complications and disease history, we referred to our previous reports 9,10 . Binomial logistic regression analysis was performed using statistical software ( spss Base 11.0j and spss Regression Models 9.0J; spss Japan, Tokyo, Japan), with postoperative oral feeding employed as the dependent variable.…”

“…Most of the OR patients and all PEG patients in the present study were within the high‐risk range for aspiration pneumonia, and some of them had a history of it. Although oral intake was prevented, aspiration pneumonia remained as one of the major problems in PEG patients 26,27 . Similar to the relation between the duration of an awake state and MMSE score, the swallowing frequency was not related to the MMSE score in OR patients, but to BI.…”

“…Pros and cons for different routes for delivery of tube feeding, above all the use of nasogastric tube (NG) and percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG), have been discussed in several studies [5][6][7][8] . PEG is a safe and comfortable method for long-term enteral feeding for appropriate patients according to guidelines from the European Society for Clinical Nutrition and Metabolism (ESPEN) [9] .…”
