Investigating trends in interest for benign prostatic hyperplasia surgery options using Google Trends

Abstract: Understanding patient interest among surgical options is challenging. We used Google Trends to analyze interest in benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) surgeries recommended for prostate volumes <80 cc. Google Trends was queried with five BPH surgeries. Final rank of search terms was TURP, UroLift, Rezum, Aquablation, and Greenlight. Google Trends can be an effective tool for evaluating public interest trends in BPH surgery.

“…Internet searches for "UroLift" and "Rez um" had also increased during that same time frame, demonstrating a shift in public interest toward MISTs. 30 Our data represent a unique source of information that covers multiple regions and practice settings, during a period in which new modalities of BPH surgery were emerging. Given the numerous existing techniques available to providers and patients and generally broad guidelines, it seems likely that practice variation will continue to exist, highlighting the importance of provider-patient shared decision-making.…”

“…These observations align with other studies examining the evolving patterns in BPH surgical treatments toward laser and minimally invasive technologies. [26][27][28][29][30] Another study discovered that among all BPH procedures, TURP was the most frequently searched term by men on Google from 2015 to 2019. Internet searches for "UroLift" and "Rez um" had also increased during that same time frame, demonstrating a shift in public interest toward MISTs.…”
