Investigating Traffic Accidents: A Collision of Two Motor Vehicles

Abstract: Traffic safety may be ensured by normal operation of all elements of the system, including the driver, a motor vehicle and transportation medium. Insufficient safety of some particular elements of this system (the lack of discipline of the participants of traffic, poor technical state of a motor vehicle or road, etc.) are the main causes of traffic accidents. Statistical data on traffic accidents in 2000–2009 in Lithuania is presented. Collisions of motor vehicles in 2009 make one of the largest proportion of … Show more

“…Road geometry in Xi'an should be checked on the national level and improvements should be made at many locations that are not up to standards, for example improving sight distances at intersections and roundabouts; checking the appropriateness of (and redesign if necessary) the acceleration and deceleration lanes to and from arterials and sub-arterials [15], etc. Moreover, it is also recommended to increase awareness of traffic signals ahead by installing warning signs before intersections and to provide enough pedestrian crossings and overpasses, especially at heavy traffic intersections and commercial regions [16]. Sufficient traffic safety education is also necessary not only for drivers but also for voluntary participants (i.e., pedestrians, bicyclists, et al).…”

“…Head-on collisions are often caused by drivers violating traffic rules, crossing the centerline by mistake and losing control of their vehicles (Zhang and Ivan, 2005). The pre-impact speed vectors of motor vehicles are directed in opposing directions during a head-on collision, resulting in greater dissipation of kinetic energy and heavier deformation of motor vehicle bodies (Prentkovskis et al, 2010), resulting in higher risk of injury.…”

“…2009;Prentkovskis et al 2010). The automobile speed on the roads in Ukraine and Lithuania have already reached 130 km/h (the speed allowed on some highways) and tend to grow further, while the design automobile speed considerably exceeds the officially allowed speed.…”
