Investigating the Relationships between Safety Climate and Safety Performance Indicators in Retrofitting Works

Abstract: Retrofitting works has become increasingly important in the construction industry, as it plays an effective role in providing solutions to maintain, upgrade or change the functions to the existing or aged buildings. Very often, safety issues of retrofitting works are underestimated because there may be unreported accidents in small projects and there is no separate classification of accident statistics for the retrofitting works within the construction industry. As safety climate is widely regarded as a contri… Show more

“…Occupational accidents are mostly caused by noncomplying facilities, improper personal protective equipment, unsafe guardrails and covers, or the absence of protective measures [3]. Relevant studies on construction site safety performance and assessment have noted that workers have low safety awareness [4,5], inadequate safety knowledge and training [6,7], and unsafe practices [8]. A review of major occupational accidents and relevant studies reveals some of the main causes of occupational accidents are workers on construction sites lacking proper personal safety knowledge and failing to take appropriate safety measures, equipment, or actions to protect themselves.…”

“…Other considerations for adopting PLS-SEM, such as theory development (10 articles, 7.19%), theory validation (9 articles, 6.47%), use of categorical variables (7 articles, 5.04%), and addressing the mediation effect (6 articles, 4.32%), were not frequently mentioned yet still played a role among the reviewed articles. Nadhim et al (2018) provided an example to explain why they used PLS-SEM for the categorical variables in their model of safety climate and performance. A total of 11 articles (7.91%) did not specify any reason for using PLS-SEM.…”

“…Additionally, two respondents were eliminated from the database due to unengaged responses. Their answer variability was very close to zero [54] and a cutoff of less than 0.3 in the standard deviation of the responses was applied [55]. Therefore, 307 responses met the necessary criteria for further analysis.…”
