Background Daily activities have been recommended to minimize the long-term complications of coronary artery bypass as one of the strategies to return to the normal activity level, the effectiveness of which needs further investigation. This study aims to determine the quality of life and activities of daily living one year after CABG. Methods This cross-sectional study was performed on 206 patients who had undergone CABG for more than one year in 2018 in the north of Iran. The research instrument was a questionnaire including five sections, Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and Chi2, Mann–Whitney U, Kruskal–Wallis tests, and a Logistic regression model. Result The mean score of quality of life was 31.7 ± 2.04 of 12 to 48 possible scores. About Activities of Daily Living results showed 99.5% and 84.7% of the samples needed help with many of these activities respectively. The mean score of quality of life was significantly different based on sex (p < 0.018) and instrumental activity of daily living (p < 0.0001). A logistic regression model was used to determine the factors related to quality of life. The final model showed cross-clamp duration (OR = 0.33,p = 0.014), length of stay(LOS)in the intensive care unit(OR = 0.42,p = 0.05), and instrumental activities of daily living (OR = 0.08,p = 0.001) predicted patients' quality of life one year after coronary artery bypass grafting. Conclusion Although more than half of the samples had a good average quality of life score, due to the lack of definitive treatment for coronary artery disease, it is suggested to consider predictive variables to help plan to improve the quality of life of these patients.

Background: In current years, the increase in older population has led to creating one of the main public health challenges, worldwide. Because of the special characteristics of older adults, this age group is exposed to possible problems, such as mental and physical disorders, that usually affect their functional independence. The study aimed to determine the psychosocial determinants (e.g., depression, social support, and self-efficacy) affecting functional independence among older population. Methods: Our search was conducted on three international databases (Web of Sciences, PubMed/Medline, and Scopus) for all the observational studies (cross-sectional, cohort or longitudinal designs) on the social and psychological determinants of functional independence among older adults. Papers published in English without limitation of time were reviewed from inception to 26 August 2023. The quality assessment tool was the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS). The I2 index was used to quantify the degree of heterogeneity among the studies. In the case of heterogeneity higher than 50%, the random effects model has been used for overall estimation of the effects; otherwise, the fixed effects model was used. The pooled associations were expressed as odds ratio (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Stata version 14 software (StataCorp LP) was used for data analysis. The significance level was considered at 0.05. Results: In the initial search, 6978 articles were retrieved, and finally, considering the inclusion criteria, 46 articles were examined. Finally, 18 articles were eligible for meta-analysis. The findings indicated that among all the determinants affecting functional independence among older adults, depression could lead to a 76% increase in functional dependence. Conclusion: The findings provide a statistically significant relationship between psychosocial factors and functional independence. Depression was the strongest determinant of functional dependence among older adults.

Background Sleep quality is one of the most important factors to improve the quality of life in older adults and physical and mental health plays an essential role in better sleep quality. This study aimed to determine the impact of social support, and physical and psychological performance on sleep outcomes in Iranian older adults. Methods In this case-control study, 400 elder people, who were exposed to sleep problems, and 400 people without sleep problems were randomly selected during 2016–2017 in Amirkola, Iran. Subjects in the case and control groups were matched in terms of gender and age. The demographic characteristics, Duke Social Support Questionnaire (DSSI), Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE), Activity of Daily Living (ADL), Instrumental Activity of Daily Living (IADL), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Questionnaire (PSQI) questionnaires were used to collect data. T-test, Chi-square, Pearson Correlation coefficient, and multiple Logistic regression were used for data analysis. Results The mean score of DSSI and its domains including social interaction (DSSI.Int) and social satisfaction (DSSI.Sat) were 28.15 ± 3.55, 9.31 ± 1.23, and 18.84 ± 2.88 in the case group and 28.87 ± 3.20, 9.48 ± 1.10, and 19.83 ± 2.44 in the control group, respectively. In this study, the mean scores of MMSE, PASE, ADL, and IADL were 25.36 ± 3.95, 101.71 ± 56.99, 13/97 ± 0.37, 20.59 ± 2/79; respectively. There was a significant inverse correlation between poor sleep quality with DSSI score (rho = -0.165, P < 0.0001), DSSI.Int (rho = -0.113, P < 0.001), DSSI.Sat (rho = -0.160, P < 0.0001), PASE (rho=-0.160, P < 0.0001), and IADL (rho = -0.112, P < 0.001) score. Therefore, more social support and physical activity improved the quality of sleep. There was a significant negative relationship between DSSI, and its domains with sleep quality in terms of gender. DSSI (rho = 0.25, P < 0.0001), DSSI.Int (P < 0.0001, rho=-0.18), and DSSI.Sat (P < 0.0001, rho=-0.22) was significant in men but not in women. The results of the adjusted logistic regression revealed a significant association between sleep quality problems and DSSI (p < 0.045, OR = 1.40), the use of hypnotic drugs (p < 0.0001, OR = 7.56), and occupation (p <0.03, OR= 12.66). Conclusions The results of the present study suggest that low social support and all its domains, PASE, IADL, and using hypnotic drugs may play a role in the development of sleep problems. It can be used as an effective, safe, and low-cost strategy for promoting sleep quality in older adults.
