Investigating the Possibility of Green Synthesis of Silver Nanoparticles Using Vaccinium arctostaphlyos Extract and Evaluating Its Antibacterial Properties

Abstract: Objective. Vaccinium genus plants have medicinal value, of which Vaccinium arctostaphylos (Caucasian whortleberry or Qare-Qat in the local language) is the only available species in Iran. Public tendency to use herbal remedies and natural products such as synthesized nanoparticles is increasing due to the proof of the destructive side effects of chemical drugs. Nanosilver products have been effective against more than 650 microbe types. This study was aimed at assessing the possibility of green synthesis of si… Show more

“…Overuse of antibiotics has brought about the issue of multidrug resistance of bacteria. In the past decades, various novel antibacterial strategies have been proposed as potential alternatives to antibiotics ( Alavi and Rai, 2021 ; Fazeli-Nasab et al, 2021 ; Khodadadi et al, 2021 ; Ahmadi, 2022 ; Alavi et al, 2022a , b ). As a newly emerged antibacterial strategy, aPDI can effectively address the issue of drug resistance and thus has promising prospects of application in treating bacterial infections.…”

“…Larger nanoparticles are more toxic due to their easier absorption and larger surface area. Furthermore, the metal ion's release rate increases as the size of nanoparticles decrease 118 . Hence it can be said that the toxicity of the nanoparticle depends on its size.…”

“…Green nanotechnology is the biosynthesis of nanomaterials from natural bioactive agents such as plant materials, microbes, and various biowastes such as agricultural residues, eggshells, vegetable waste, fruit peels, and others, accompanied by the use of nanoproducts to achieve sustainability [1,2]. It is a low-cost, simple, safe, low-risk, nontoxic, and environmentally friendly approach [3,4]. Green nanotechnology is a vital feature of clean technologies aimed at environmental remediation and the conversion of extrabioactive products into more lucrative and environmentally friendly green nanomaterials.…”
