Investigating the pavement performance and aging resistance of modified bio-asphalt with nano-particles

Abstract: Bio-asphalt binders have been proposed as replacements for traditional asphalt binders, owing to advantages such as environmental protection, low costs, and abundant resources. However, a limitation of bio-asphalt binders is that their high-temperature performance is not suitable for pavement construction. In recent years, nano-particles have been widely used to improve the pavement performance of asphalt binders, particularly the high-temperature performance. Thus, the nano-particles might also provide a posi… Show more

“…There are many kinds of materials that can be used as modifiers, and the current research mainly includes the following aspects. Some researchers use biomaterials as modifiers to prepare bio-asphalt [ 6 , 7 , 8 ], such as beans [ 9 ], waste cooking oil [ 10 , 11 ], biochar [ 12 , 13 ], and so on. Forestry resources and animal excreta are liquefied and separated to prepare modifiers.…”

“…The high-temperature performance and aging resistance were improved at increased nanoparticle contents, especially for nano-SiO 2 , while their low-temperature performance was slightly weakened. The effects of the nanoparticles on the functional performance and water stability were insignificant [ 26 ].…”

“…Other studies also indicated that, when nano-ZnO particles are incorporated into asphalt binder, the viscosity aging index and the mass loss of the modified asphalt binder were inferior to those of the unmodified one after UV aging conditions [ 33 , 34 , 35 ]. Moreover, the introduction of nano-ZnO particles and expanded vermiculite in the asphalt binder improved its resistance to thermo-oxidative and UV aging at the same time, reducing the deterioration rates of the modified asphalt binder [ 11 , 26 , 32 , 36 ].…”

“…Nanomaterial modifiers, a class of special materials, are an effective solution for asphalt aging. For instance, with nanozinc oxide (nano-ZnO) particles incorporated into asphalt, the mass loss and viscosity aging index of modified asphalt are lower than that of unmodified asphalt after UV aging processes. Furthermore, the introduction of nano-ZnO particles and expanded vermiculite improves the asphalt resistance to thermo-oxidative and UV aging at the same time, significantly retarding the properties deterioration rates of the modified asphalt. , Actually, since the last decades, nanomaterials had increased interest from researchers who devoted themselves to improving the durability of asphalt pavement, and a series of studies have been conducted. The investigation results show that until now, there have been more than 22, 800 scientific papers (including articles, books, and reports) about applying nanomaterials to modify asphalt. Further, to comprehensively understand nanomaterial modification effects and provide promising development directions, some reviews have been published since 2013. , ,− The related information has been investigated and is summarized in Table .…”
