Investigating the nature of formal reasoning in chemistry: Testing Lawson's multiple hypothesis theory

Abstract: Lawson (1992) posited the multiple hypothesis theory to explain the essence of scientific reasoning. According to this theory, the essence of scientific reasoning is "the ability to initiate reasoning with more than one antecedent condition." The present study tests the assumptions of this theory with high school students in general experience areas and in chemistry. The findings are generally in support of the theory's assumptions. This article also contains a theoretical discussion which points out how the t… Show more

“…The ability to evaluate evidence independently of prior beliefs is a basic component of effective or advanced thinking (Klaczynski et al, 1997; Stanovich & West, 1997). Consideration of alternative hypotheses has been regarded by other researchers (e.g., Lawson, 1992; Norman, 1997) as the most salient aspect of advanced reasoning. Students' reasoning usually lacks the characteristics of successful theory–evidence coordination and is hence inadequate.…”

“…Testteki sorular incelendiğinde ağırlıklı olarak olasılık sorularından oluştuğu görülmektedir. Norman (1997) Lawson (1978) tarafından geliştirilen Lawson Mantıksal Düşünme Testi (MDT) Türkçe'ye Yüzüak (2012) tarafından uyarlanmıştır. Test, kütlenin ve hacminin korunumu, orantısal düşünme, değişenlerin kontrolü, olasılıklı, korelasyonel ve hipotetik düşünmeye ilişkin 15 sorudan oluşmaktadır.…”

“…Since the 1970s, the identification of predictors of academic performance in science courses has been an object of study among science education researchers . During past years, student performance in science courses has been analyzed on the basis of high school experiences , precalculus grades , mathematics diagnostics , verbal and mathematics components of the SAT , and ACT , mental capacity measured as M-Demand through the Figural Intersection Test , formal operational reasoning measured by using the Test of Logical Thinking and the Group Assessment of Logical Thinking (GALT) test ,, , and disembedding ability measured through the Group Embedded Figures Test , among many others.…”
