Investigating the hexadecylamine as a new nonionic surfactant candidate for electrodeposition of wear-resistant metal-matrix composites

Abstract: In this study, Ni-B/hBN composite coatings were galvanostatically electrodeposited on 304 L grade steel substrates with 50 mA cm −2 of current density from a modified Watt type nickel electrodeposition bath including trimethylamine-borane complex (TMAB), and hBN with the average particle size of 100 nm. The effect of the concentration of hexadecylamine (HDA) as a nonionic surfactant has been investigated. The concentration range was 0-400 ppm. HDA has a significant positive effect on mechanical, tribological a… Show more

“…Ni-B coatings; It is widely utilized in areas such as automotive, aerospace, petro chemistry, textile and electronics due to its high hardness, resistance to corrosion and strong resistance to abrasion. However, it is still being tried to improve its properties with various studies in order to be used in these areas (Chang et al, 2017;Matsui et al 2017;Matsui et al, 2018;Mirak & Akbari, 2018;Ogihara et al, 2012;Onoda et al, 1999;Sanyal et al, 2013;Shakoor et al, 2014aShakoor et al, , 2014bTozar, 2020;Ünal & Karahan, 2018aÜnal & Karahan, , 2018bWaware et al, 2018).…”

“…The main disadvantages of magnetron sputtering are a low deposition rate and a strong decrease in the ion substrate current with an increased combination of the substrate to target distance [ 38 , 39 ]. Electrodeposition or electroplating techniques have recently been employed to enhance the surface properties, which inhibit corrosion and wear with the improved mechanical strength of coatings [ 40 ]. Compared to sputtering, evaporation and chemical vapor deposition methods, and electroplating or electrodeposition methods are more reliable and economical [ 41 , 42 ].…”
