Investigating the feasibility of idiographic network models.

Abstract: Waters for sharing with us their data. Additionally, we would like to thank Fabio A. Melis for raising discussion points that were of inspiration for this work during his master thesis. Part of the current work was presented during the Psychological Networks Amsterdam Summer School 2020, and will be presented in a poster at the 54 th Annual Convention of the Association for Behavioral and Cognitive Therapies.

“…The EBIC is controlled by setting the hyperparameter γ to an appropriate value between 0 and 1, where higher values imply a preference for parsimony . As in Mansueto et al (2022), γ was set to 0 to achieve a higher sensitivity. Because the lasso is sensitive to different variances, we z-transformed all variables before all analyses.…”

“…Models that employ purely data-driven approaches based on data of a single individual can have several limitations, as they can ignore clinical judgment and can be hard to estimate and interpret properly (Burger et al, 2021;Klintwall et al, 2021). Several ideas might be able to counteract these issues by integrating clinical knowledge (Burger et al, 2021) or information from other individuals into individual networks (Beltz et al, 2016;Mansueto et al, 2022).…”

“…These methods are resource intensive. More perplexingly, methodological work shows that they need to be even more resource intensive to work properly (Mansueto et al, 2022). Even with extensive resources, these models are unlikely to be useful for scholars of belief systems because many of the attitudes and identities that make up political belief systems have high temporal stability (Brandt & Morgan, in press; Kiley & Vaisey, 2020).…”

“…Further, while psychopathological processes are within-person, analyses operated at the group level, potentially limiting construct validity and further restricting direct clinical utility. 102 Use of, idiographic network analysis, 103 causal search algorithms, 104 and network intervention or outcome analytic approaches 11,79 could elucidate causal and intra-individual dynamics involved in the interplay between insomnia, depression, and anxiety symptoms. Such analyses could inform new directions in personalised, transdiagnostic treatments for patients experiencing these symptoms.…”
