PurposeThe banking industry, which is one of the most significant industries when taking into account both deposit sizes and employment statistics in Turkey, is one of the country's primary economic drivers. In this regard, it is highly important to evaluate banks as it is necessary to present to what extent they use their resources efficiently. The main purpose of the study is to analyze the efficiencies of Turkish banks by the two-stage data envelopment analysis (DEA) and Malmquist productivity index (MPI).Design/methodology/approachThe authors aim to analyze both the efficiency and productivity of Turkish banks by two-stage DEA and the MPI, which enable decomposing into sub-sections of production processes. Hence, more detailed insight into the Turkish banking system can be presented through two-stage efficiency and production approaches.FindingsDEA results indicate that two out of three state-owned banks achieved resource efficiency while none of the investigated banks performed profit efficiency throughout the investigated period. Besides, average resource efficiency is found higher than average profit efficiency in Turkish banks. MPI results reveal that both technological and technical improvement prospects exist for Turkish banks.Originality/valueThe original contribution of this paper is to employ two-stage DEA and the MPI, which reflect both the static and dynamic performance of the Turkish banking sector. In this regard, this study aims to be a pioneer by both reflecting the static and dynamic performance analysis of Turkish banks.

The economic downturn caused by the financial crisis of 2008–2009 and the intensifying global climate policy trends forced changes in the energy management of the European Union. The study examined how the most relevant energy economic variables affected the economic growth of the E.U. between 2010–2019. The study used the PSL-PM methodology to explore the relationship between G.D.P. (dependent variable) and energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, the average energy price, and renewable energy use (independent variables). The main findings are: G.D.P. growth is negatively correlated with CO2 emissions, showing that the E.U. economy is still highly dependent on fossil fuels; the increase in the proportion of renewable energy consumption contributed to the growth of the E.U.’s G.D.P.; CO2 emissions, energy consumption, and the average energy price are more critical in E.U. member states with a lower G.D.P.; renewable energy use and energy balance are essential in countries where more emphasis is placed on replacing traditional energy sources and reducing energy dependence; there is a strong positive correlation between G.D.P. and renewable energy use, indicating that this type of energy use effectively supports E.U. economic growth. The results of the multicollinearity test show that there is also a strong linear dependence between the independent energy economic variables. One of the significances of the study is that the presented and analyzed variables and the relationships between them can contribute to optimizing the E.U.’s currently critical energy management and economic growth.

This paper discusses the interlinkages between energy security indicators and government economic interventions in the electricity sector. The research was carried out using a systematic literature review and comparative analysis and was mainly based on qualitative criteria. Following a literature review and data analysis, the paper identifies 65 energy security indicators (from over 300 possible indicators) that are relevant for the electricity sector. The work also highlights the indicators of energy security on which the state's economic decisions have a direct and indirect effect. This is the basis of the scientific novelty and relevance of this study. The paper highlights the role of public economic policy in the domain of energy security (including energy supply, reliability and affordability). This research helps to show how different parts of energy safety in the electricity field are connected. It shows how government economic choices can have both direct and indirect effects on energy outcomes, helping us understand the complex ways policies and energy results relate to each other. The paper argues that state interventions in areas such as public support for promotion of renewable energy sources and energy efficiency gains, and energy price regulation exert a significant effect on energy security in the electricity sector. The paper also examines the theoretical issues underpinning the definition, dimensions and assessment of energy security. Possible trade‐offs between economic growth and energy security are discussed drawing attention to the importance of a balanced approach to formulation of economic policy. The study also argues that state economic decisions play a crucial role in shaping energy security in the electricity sector and stresses the topicality of a better ability to fathom the potential outcomes of these decisions. The comprehensive analysis of 65 energy security indicators presented in this paper gives valuable insights for both analysts and decision makers. The analysis confirms the importance of a nuanced approach in measuring and combining these indicators into policymaking (for governments, industry leaders, scientists, researchers, NGOs) to enhance the overall effectiveness and sustainability of energy security policies in the electricity sector. The findings suggest that policies promoting renewable energy, energy efficiency and diversification are key to achieving a stable and sustainable electricity supply, urging further research incorporating dynamic models and data analytics for comprehensive energy security strategies.
