Investigating the Efficacy of Web-Based Transfer Training on Independent Wheelchair Transfers Through Randomized Controlled Trials

Abstract: Transfer training can improve technique with changes retained within a short follow-up window, even among experienced wheelchair users. Web-based transfer training demonstrated comparable improvements to in-person training. With almost half of the United States population consulting online resources before a health care professional, web-based training may be an effective method to increase knowledge translation.

“…Because the summary scores from the 2 parts are highly correlated (Pearson r = 0.749, p < 0.001), only the Part 1 summary and total TAI scores were reported. This is consistent with others who have published results on the TAI (Tsai, Rice, Hoelmer, Boninger, & Koontz, , Hogaboom, Diehl, et al, , Hogaboom, Huang, Worobey, Koontz, & Boninger, , Hogaboom, Worobey, & Boninger, , Tsai et al, , Worobey, Rigot, Hogaboom, Venus, & Boninger, , Tsai et al, ).…”

“…The use of a web-based transfer training module has been shown to significantly improve the transferring technique of wheelchair users. Technique gains tested immediately after training and after a short follow-up period were comparable to the one obtained with in-person training[2826].OThe availability of online resources canould help provide wheelchair users with much needed training material that will allow them to develop transfer skills when in-person training is not possible and online videos can be . Additionally, web-based open source material could be consulted on-demand when people are faced with new and challenging situations.…”

“…Online educational modules facilitate easy access as users are able to learn how to use the MPMA directly by themselves [14,15]. Online training has been shown to have similar effects to in-person training, potentially decreasing training time and staff burden [14,15].…”
