In this article, the influence of texture surface of a fabric on its instrumental color is investigated. While former studies have found it is difficult to establish a quantitative relationships between texture of fabric and its instrumental color (color difference and color attributes, such as lightness, chroma, and hue), this article investigates from a theoretical and empirical perspective the interaction between texture and color. Eighty four knitted cotton yarn dyed fabric samples in four color centers and 21 texture structures were used in this study. It is revealed that fabric samples with different texture surfaces define a set of lines with identical direction in the reflectance space, and thus the normalized reflectance curves of these samples are identical. In the CIEXYZ space, tristimulus values of these fabric samples define a line, and thus their chromaticity coordinates are constant. In the CIELAB space, however, linearity is lost due to the non-linear transformation from the CIEXYZ space to the CIELAB space. The finding of this article has the potential to discount the influence of texture of a fabric on its color. Experiments show that the influence of texture on color for samples in the four color centers can be reduced by 79, 55, 71, and 57%, respectively comparing to the real measured color difference.

For developing color difference formulas, there are several choices to be made on the psychophysical method used for gathering visual (observer) data. We tested three different psychophysical methods: gray scales, constant stimuli, and two-alternative forced choice (2AFC). Our results show that when using gray scales or constant stimuli, assessments of color differences are biased toward lightness differences. This bias is particularly strong in LCD monitor experiments, and also present when using physical paint samples. No such bias is found when using 2AFC. In that case, however, observer responses are affected by other factors that are not accounted for by current color difference formulas. For accurate prediction of relative color differences, our results show, in agreement with other works, that modern color difference formulas do not perform well. We also investigated if the use of digital images as presented on LCD displays is a good alternative to using physical samples. Our results indicate that there are systematic differences between these two media.

Four colour difference formulae [CIELAB (1976), CMC (2:1), CIE94 (2:1:1) and CIEDE2000 (2:1:1)] were assessed in CIELAB colour space for regular changes in colour coordinates. L*, a* and b* coordinates were changed regularly both as increasing and decreasing steps in different lightness and hue regions of the colour space. The dependence and consistency of the four formulae were researched depending on regular and constant colour coordinate changes. The aim of the empirical study was to determine if there could be a possibility of using different colour difference formulae in different hue regions of CIELAB colour space; in the region of bulk that each formula would give the best fitting and the most reliable results. The empirical study was carried out by using a special software which was prepared for the purpose. The results showed that CIELAB and CIE94 gave corresponding results with each other in the computing ranges. All the formulae showed different computing characteristics in the computation ranges. CMC formula gave the highest colour differences when computing near the grey point. It was concluded that CIEDE2000 formula suited itself the best according to the changes in computing steps. A more complicated software would be necessary to determine the sensitivity of the formulae by which the computing would be performed by changing all the coordinates (L*, a* and b*) at the same time.
