Investigating the effect of grounding GPS antennas on their radiation properties on vehicular platforms

Abstract: The global positioning system (GPS) has become a standard navigation tool in modern vehicular platforms. The location of the GPS antenna has a direct impact on the overall navigation system performance. In this work, we investigate the effect of shorting the GPS antenna placed on the front windshield of a vehicle to its rooftop GND plane. It is shown that such a connection will improve the gain of the antenna by several dBs.
