Investigating the effect of computer-mediated feedback via an LMS integration in a large-scale Japanese speaking class

Abstract: In second or foreign language (SFL) education, oral corrective feedback (OCF) is widely used to individually correct students’ erroneous utterances during classroom hours. However, students cannot have sufficient opportunities for oral production and personalized feedback during classroom hours if a class is large-scale with many students. This paper addresses the lack of OCF opportunities in a large-scale class, assuming the causes to be the severe time constraints and the teachers’ labor intensiveness in exa… Show more

“…Our previous study introduced a web-based LMS to enable individual online speaking assessments/exams in a large-scale spoken Japanese class of more than 100 students per teacher at an Indian university [33]. Our proposed system, 'ORP Gym' [34], which is an extended web-based LMS using Moodle [35], enables a class teacher to provide asynchronous speaking tasks with audio recording outside classroom hours even in a large-scale SFL class. Using ORP Gym, students who have internet connectivity and mobile devices can attempt the speaking tasks without time or place restrictions.…”

“…Our computer-mediated out-of-class speaking practice support system was developed on ORP Gym [34], which is a webbased LMS (using Moodle 3.11+, PHP 7.3, MySQL 14.14) on a Linux server (Ubuntu 18.04.6 LTS). Figure 1 shows the system overview of the speaking practice support system by detailing the asynchronous transaction between students and online evaluators.…”
