Investigating Peat Soil Stratigraphy and Marine Clay Formation Using the Geophysical Method in Padas Valley, Northern Borneo

Abstract: A geophysical survey including electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), induced polarization (IP), and seismic refraction (SR) was carried out to estimate peatland thickness in Beaufort District, Eastern Malaysia. Peatlands are important natural carbon storage and play a key role in the global carbon cycle. The ERT and IP studies were performed along three profiles over different peat thicknesses using Schlumberger configuration. The SR survey was carried out using vertical geophones along the same profiles. T… Show more

“…The resistivity ranges in Figure 1 have been deduced from the examples in the literature. Peat soil has a wide resistivity range spanning from tens to a few hundred Ωm, depending on the moisture content, salt concentration, degree of decomposition, and mineral composition (Mohamad et al., 2021; Silvestri, Christensen, et al., 2019; Silvestri, Knight, et al., 2019; Valois et al., 2021). Also the resistivity of clay sediments may vary significantly depending on the soil conditions (in particular, the water content and its salinity) (Cheng et al., 2019; Samouëlian et al., 2005; Solberg et al., 2014).…”

“…The 5-layer width for the filter has been chosen by inspecting the effect on the final resistivity vertical profiles: a shorter span would have not satisfactorily reduced the erratic behavior of the original resistivity (thick lines in Figure 1), whereas a filter window larger than 0.5 m would have smeared out the sharp interfaces between the lithologies. Peat soil has a wide resistivity range spanning from tens to a few hundred Ωm, depending on the manuscript submitted to Earth and Space Science moisture content, salt concentration, degree of decomposition, and mineral composition (Silvestri et al, 2019a;Silvestri et al 2019b;Valois et al 2021;Mohamad et al, 2021). Also the resistivity of clay sediments may vary significantly depending on the soil conditions (in particular, the water content and its salinity) (Samouëlian et al 2005;Solberg et al 2014;Cheng et al 2019).…”
