Investigating parallel genetic algorithms on job shop scheduling problems

Abstract: This paper describes a GA for job shop scheduling problems. Using the Giffler and Thompson algorithm, we created two new operators, THX crossover and mutation, which better transmit temporal relationships in the schedule. The approach produced excellent results on standard benchmark job shop scheduling problems. We further tested many models and scales of parallel GAs in the context of job shop scheduling problems. In our experiments, the hybrid model consisting of coarse-grain GAs connected in a fine-grain-GA… Show more

“…The model shown in Fig. 6(d) was initially used by [63] and has received some attention in works like [7], [8], [56], and [79]. In this model, the basic islands perform a cEA, thus trying to get the combined advantages of the two models.…”

“…However, this baseline is obtained without any anticipation about the uncertainties. The repairing or revising process is usually repetitive and is considered as a local search process [31], [45]. Since this approach is based on existence of the baseline solution, some researchers have labeled it as 'predictivereactive'.…”

“…There are not many researchers who pay attention to migration strategies, even though they agree that improvement can be achieved if a different migration strategy is applied to their algorithm [10]. One researcher who has done a study specific to migration strategy is Cao Yijia [11].…”
