The air pollution due to tropospheric ozone (O3) is one of the most serious problems of large industrialized cities in the world. The excessive increase in O3 has a negative impact on the population health. Consequently, researchers have focused their efforts establishing measures to characterize the statistical analysis of spatio-temporal data. This work shows a study based on seasonal analysis of spatio-temporal data through second order structure function to and the scale behavior in power law by using the Hurst exponent (H) and analyzing the trend of fluctuations associated with O3 pollution concentration records at four monitoring stations in the Metropolitan Area of Mexico City (MAMC) considering the four season of the year. The records were consulted from the database of the Automatic Atmospheric Monitoring Network (AAMN) in Mexico City from 2010 to 2018. The results show the differences in behavior of ozone according to the seasons of the year in this megacity. The behavior of statistical persistence predominates in spring, with 63.89% of occurrence over the total of the samples analyzed. In winter, the observed regime is antipersistent, with 80.56%. The three regimes: persistence, randomness and antipersistence were observed in summer and autumn, with a similar proportion of occurrence of 33% ± 3%. Given the above, the climatological characteristics of each season could be associated with the regimes of persistent, random and antipersistent behavior of the fluctuation of the concentration of the pollutant O3

Tropospheric ozone (O3) can strongly damage vegetation. Grapevines (Vitis vinifera L.), in particular, have intermediate sensitivity to ozone. Wine production is an important economic activity, as well as a pillar to the cultural identity of several countries in the world. This study aims to evaluate the risk of Douro vineyards exposure to ozone, by estimating its concentration and deposition in the Demarcated Region of Douro in Portugal. Based on an assessment of the climatology of the area, the years 2003 to 2005 were selected among the hottest years of the recent past, and the chemical transport model CHIMERE was used to estimate the three-dimensional field of ozone and its dry deposition over the Douro region with 1 km2 of horizontal resolution. Model results were validated by comparison with measured data from the European air quality database (AirBase). The exposure indicator AOT40 (accumulated concentration of ozone above 40 ppb) was calculated and an exposure–response function was applied to determine the grapevine risk to ozone exposure. The target value for the protection of vegetation established by the Air Quality Framework Directive was exceeded on most of the Douro region, especially over the Baixo Corgo and Cima Corgo sub-regions. The results of the exposure–response functions suggest that the productivity loss can reach 27% and that the sugar content of the grapes could be reduced by 32%, but these values are affected by the inherent uncertainty of the used methodology.

Surface ozone (O3) is a secondary air pollutant, harmful to human health and vegetation. To provide a long-term study of O3 concentrations in Portugal (study period: 2009–2019), a statistical analysis of ozone trends in rural stations (where the highest concentrations can be found) was first performed. Additionally, the effect of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and meteorological variables on O3 concentrations were evaluated in different environments in northern Portugal. A decreasing trend of O3 concentrations was observed in almost all monitoring stations. However, several exceedances to the standard values legislated for human health and vegetation protection were recorded. Daily and seasonal O3 profiles showed high concentrations in the afternoon and summer (for all inland rural stations) or spring (for Portuguese islands). The high number of groups obtained from the cluster analysis showed the difference of ozone behaviour amongst the existent rural stations, highlighting the effectiveness of the current geographical distribution of monitoring stations. Stronger correlations between O3, NO, and NO2 were detected at the urban site, indicating that the O3 concentration was more NOx-sensitive in urban environments. Solar radiation showed a higher correlation with O3 concentration regarding the meteorological influence. The wind and pollutants transport must also be considered in air quality studies. The presented results enable the definition of air quality policies to prevent and/or mitigate unfavourable outcomes from O3 pollution.
