Sustainable crop production supports food security by mitigating water and nutrient stress from manures by excessively drained water. Cow manure is a good nutrient resource to enhance soil fertility and plant growth but requires a suitable amender to reduce the nutrients loss by leaching. Worldwide more than 20400 metric tonnes of pistachios were consumed where roughly 30% of the weight of the nut is the shell and could be a good feedstock for biochar production. Therefore, this study aims to produce biochar from pistachio shell by pyrolysis process at three different temperatures 350 to 550°C and by the analysis of various properties towards agriculture, the biochar at 450 ˚C was amended with 0% (control), 2%, 4% and 8% to the manure for eggplant growth (Solanum melongena). Out of all fractions of biochar application, 2% biochar has virtuous performance to increase 5.63 ± 1.45 cm of plant height, 1.33 ± 4.79 cm leaf length and 1.90 ± 4.43 cm leaf width compared to the control. The leaf chlorophyl content and plant biomass were also significantly (p = 0.02) increased compared to the control condition. However, there is no statistical difference was noticed in stomatal conductance and water retention capacity (p > 0.11) due to greater plant growth. We concluded from this study, a lower fraction of biochar application with manure is beneficial to reduce nutrient leaching from the manure. Under the circular economy and frameworks of sustainability, pistachio shell biochar application as an amendment in crop production has been a high legislative focus on valorizing food waste.

This study presents the copyrolysis of three biomasses (date pits, cow manure, and coffee waste) and explores the potential of utilizing natural waste catalysts—seashell (SS) and cuttlebone (CB)—to improve the kinetics and thermodynamics of the process. Mixing the feeds led to positive synergistic effects, particularly at a heating rate of 10 K/min or higher. By employing three model-free kinetic methods, the estimated activation energy (Ea) was lower for the ternary feed than the single feeds, and 20 wt.% of the feed with SS and CB catalysts was added. The Ea reduced from 162 kJ/mol for the ternary feed by 25.6% (~121 kJ/mol) and 21.6% (154 kJ/mol) in the presence of SS and CB, respectively. The thermodynamic parameters were positive for all the noncatalytic feeds, resulting in endothermic, nonspontaneous reactions and increased disorder or randomness. Catalysts influenced the thermodynamic parameters, making the process more energy efficient. The results are the utilization of cheap, eco-friendly feeds and catalysts for sustainable energy production using copyrolysis.

Effective removal of heavy metals from wastewaters can enable increased reuse of treated wastewater and reduce water scarcity worldwide. This paper describes the results of an initial study on zinc removal using waste-derived aluminosilicate-based material by binary ion exchange with calcium and potassium. About 2 mmol/g of zinc removal adsorption capacity was demonstrated using the aluminosilicate resin. Seven equilibrium isotherm models have been analyzed using the zinc adsorption data; the best fit to the experimental values based on the lowest SSE error was the SIPS model. A mechanism between zinc adsorption and the calcium and potassium desorption has been developed and modelled and is confirmed based on the mass balance analysis between the divalent calcium ions and the monovalent potassium ions exchanged with the divalent zinc ions adsorbed. Desorption studies using isotherm model equations for the calcium and potassium data further confirmed the mechanism. Regeneration was over 80% per cycle for three acid regenerations, indicating the zinc can be recovered for re-use. Furthermore, optimization using the SIPS model showed the minimum amount of adsorbent required using a two-stage reactor system is much lower, proving the need for a two-stage reactor to make the system more economical. Future experiments on multicomponent analysis and further optimization will help develop this adsorbent for real water systems.
