Investigating In-service Elementary School Teachers’ Satisfaction with Participating in MOOC for Teaching Biological Concepts

Abstract: This paper reports on a study exploring the in-service elementary school teachers satisfaction as far as the design and implementation of a Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), which took place during the second wave of pandemic COVID-19 and prepared in-service elementary school teachers how to teach biological concepts in Primary School with the utilization of digital educational content and Open Educational Recourses (OER). “…Finally, to investigate the MOOC's contribution to improving teachers' self-efficacy beliefs the participants filled the questionnaire bio-STEBI-A, which measured both teachers' personal self-efficacy beliefs, that is their capability for success in teaching biological concepts and their outcome expectancy beliefs, that is the levels of confidence teachers have that their students will learn the biological concepts, at the last week of the course. At the same time the participants completed an online questionnaire regarding their satisfaction of the course (Tzovla et al, 2021). This questionnaire used both 15 (out of 95) statements of the instrument of Koukis and Jimoyiannis (2019) and the Critical Incident Questionnaire (CIQ) of Brookfield (Keefer, 2009).…”

“…In conclusion, it is worth noting that there is an increased interest both in the teaching of biological concepts in Primary Education, in topics that are relevant to the active citizen and in skills related to the new data of Pedagogical Science, and in the use of digital educational content and OER in their teaching. Based on the results of the initial research and after investigating the educational needs of teachers, who expressed interest, a program was designed and implemented exclusively for in-service elementary school teachers, with the aim of improving their self-efficacy beliefs in teaching biological concepts (Tzovla & Kedraka, 2021;Tzovla et al, 2021a;Tzovla et al, 2021b). This project is innovative, as the design and implementation of a distance learning program for inservice elementary school teachers, which investigates before its implementation the educational needs of teachers who expressed interest in attending it, has not been applied at the Greek and international level.…”
