Investigating critical failure drivers of construction project at planning stage in Saudi Arabia

Abstract: PurposeThe purpose of this research is to identify the constraints and restrictions and their impact on the construction projects in Saudi Arabia from three key participants' perspectives for the planning stage.Design/methodology/approachUsing a descriptive-analytical approach, this research described and analyzed the frequency and severity of failure factors in construction projects in the planning stage using a five-Likert scale questionnaire in Saudi Arabia construction between 2019 and 2020. A total of 100… Show more

“…This new proposition suggests that it is recommended to give the SC responsibility already in the design stage to prevent problems in later stages. This is in keeping with other studies, which state that the design stage can have a significant impact on later stages in construction projects (Alsulamy, 2022;Khan et al, 2021;Zaneldin, 2016). However, it contrasts with other literature that states that late involvement (construction stage) of the SC is considered a preferred way of sub-contracting, despite negative characteristics (Lee et al, 2009).…”

“…Considering that design responsibilities are increasingly pushed down to SCs nowadays, it is relevant to study which level of design responsibility MCs sub-contract to SCs and why. Few studies address this, but decisions made during the design stage can have a significant impact on following stages (Alsulamy, 2022; Zaneldin, 2016). This research bridges this gap in knowledge.…”

“…It describes behavior as well as judging and evaluating procedures [19]. The construction sector governs any country's economy and is considered an indicator of a nation's financial well-being [51,52]. There have been lamentations about project performance among countries, as evidenced by the number of failures reported on construction project performance [52].…”

Performance measurement systems have evolved into critical tools in the successful management of organizations in order to ensure that their objectives are met.…”

“…Alzaraa et al (2016) report the investigation of university construction project delays through the performance information procurement (PIP) system to minimize the delays caused by Saudi Arabian public projects. Alsulamy (2022) has investigated the critical failure factors (CFFs) of construction projects at the planning stage in Saudi Arabia. He has found that the top CFFs are time disputes over projects, cost overruns and total abandonment.…”
