The role of universities as the engines of knowledge‐based economies drives global internationalisation of higher education. This contributes to a competitive environment where higher education rankings indicate market value. Even though rankings are influential and are used a lot, ranking systems have been heavily critiqued. One of the problems is that there are few if any external checks on how rankings are created. The purpose of the study on which this article reports was to evaluate ranking systems. Within the scope of the study, we have sought to reveal to what extent current ranking systems comply with the Berlin Principles—prepared to create certain rules for rankings, and to ensure that rankings represent quality. A document analysis of publicly available documents online was carried out together with a review of printed and electronic publications on ranking systems. An evaluation form was prepared and used in this study for field experts to fill in. Findings show that ranking systems comply with the Berlin Principles in terms of methodology, transparency, and acceptability at a level that ranges from moderate to low. Overall, rankings do not consider differences in higher education and are not transparent about the processes by which rankings are developed. Rankings should for this reason be interpreted carefully and methodological weaknesses of rankings that can lead to false inferences should be recognised.

Objective. In this article, the academic mobility of Brazilian doctoral students moving from their home cities to other Brazilian cities including other countries is examined. Design/Methodology/Approach. The LattesDataXplorer tool was used to extract curriculum data from the Lattes Platform. 308,317 resumes were collected in May 2019, since then the data have been filtered, obtaining relevant data for the research. After extracting the data, they were enriched with the integration of other data sources, thus enabling the characterization of bibliometric networks for the analyses. Results/Discussion. It was possible to measure distances traveled by Brazilian doctors throughout their academic training, as well as to point out the cities, states, and countries whose doctors most meet in the academic journey and the relationships between these locations. Thus, making it possible to obtain a portrait of how the Brazilian scientific exodus occurs. In general, more than 90% of curricula have information on the academic background at each level of education. The average distance of 291 km between birth and place of formation at the graduation level is strongly influenced by outliers. Individuals choose to travel shorter distances throughout the academic training process, being the geographic location a strong influence on the migratory process for training. Conclusions. The United States represents the country where individuals choose to move the most. Regarding international migration, there is more preference for European countries than South American ones. When it comes to intra-regional migration, students prefer those states where the most relevant universities are located. Originality/Value. The article presents the results of original research focusing on the Brazilian scientific community. Distances performed by doctoral students throughout their academic trajectory are measured, as well as the main locations where they tend to move.

The phenomenon of internationalization is a priority for higher education institutions. The Erasmus program is the cornerstone of their internationalization strategy, bringing benefits for student recruitment and career outcomes, as well as for staff expertise. Within this scenario, our contribution aims to analyze the performance of European education systems in terms of learning mobility between countries from a longitudinal perspective. International student mobility is analyzed in the context of the Erasmus programs over twelve years in order to compare international mobility trajectories between European countries in terms of quantitative benchmarking and to identify the factors that may influence a country’s performance in terms of its role in mobility network exchanges. A mixed analytical strategy of analysis was adopted, combining exploratory and confirmatory approaches from a network perspective. Centrality indices and network modeling are computed to compare countries’ performances and factors affecting mobility patterns in higher education systems. The main findings can offer policy suggestions for universities in order to improve the quality of their international services.
