The process of determining groups, features and functions of discourse markers or discourse particle are debateable among language researchers. Various definitions and classification of elements have developed confusion of its status. The efforts to rearrange various opinions related to discourse markers or discourse particles according to certain functions are able to create systematic categories and expose its functions clearly. This article aimed to examine a number of discourse markers concepts or discourse particles and its functions according to the context of grammar and pragmatics as well as the features and domains of discourse markers or discourse particles from views from past studies. The methodology used was the examination of discourse markers or discourse particles into a theory, a model which explained the functions of discourse markers or discourse particles. This explained the research findings which listed the inventory concept of discourse markers or discourse particles, the functions, features and domain of discourse markers or discourse particles in detailed. Distribution of concepts, functions and domain of discourse markers or discourse particles from the views from past studies indicated that discourse markers or discourse particles is a meaningful entity in communication.

This study examines the pragmatic functions of the marker sawa in spoken Swahili. The data have been obtained from informal conversations made by Swahili speakers in informal social settings. These settings include “vijiwe vya kahawa” (setting of informal conversations created around people drinking coffee) and “vijiwe vya mamantilie” (setting of informal conversations created around women preparing and selling food on the streets). The analysis of the data, performed within the framework of the contextualization theory (Gumperz 1982), shows that, apart from its basic connotation of agreement, the marker sawa conveys other meanings, depending on these very contexts of communication, and therefore acquires also various pragmatic functions. The pragmatic functions identified in this work include: to show that the speaker agrees with what has been said but on a condition (I agree, but…), as a receipt marker, as a tag-positioned-comprehension check, as an answer to the question showing that the speaker has understood what has been said (Yes, I understand), as a continuer, as a negative releasing marker, and as a gap filler. Interestingly, the study shows also that intonation and other paralinguistic features (like gestures) play a role in determining the pragmatic functions of this marker. The article concludes that the pragmatic markers in spoken Swahili are rich in meanings and are used to show speakers’ attitudes and emotions, therefore manifesting a deep and meaningful interconnection between the language and its contextualized experience.

Multifunctionality of the Pragmatic Marker ‘?amaanah’ in Yemeni Spoken Arabic

the present study aims at exploring and describing the multiple functions of the PM ‘?amaanah’ in the corpus of Yemeni spoken Arabic. A total of 174 audio-recorded data of natural conversations were analyzed as spoken corpus of Yemeni Arabic. The study is based on an eclectic analytical method whose views have been drawn from the theoretical frameworks of the speech act theory, politeness theory, model of functional systemic linguistics (the interpersonal metafunction), and relevance theory. The findings of the study show that the PM ‘?amaanah’ functions as: an expression of oath; a commitment marker to a future action on the part of the speaker and the addressee; a mitigation marker, preceding potentially face-threating speech acts; a signal introducing reprimanding; an attitude marker expressing a speaker’s attitude and emotion; an epistemic marker evaluating the subjectivity of the speaker’s propositional content; an entreaty-marker on directive act; and a displeasure marker on the part of the speaker. The study concluded with a suggestion on conducting a further research exploring the discourse functions of the marker.
