“…This investigation started connected with the one developed in Barcelona the previous years and the network of academics who would develop it came "recommended", and even accompanied, by the ones who have already been working with the groups in Catalonia, so it was somehow easier to establish those first contacts and trust that the researchers in the investigation mentioned before were not able to make. Thus, Scandroglio and López (2010) In the conclusions of the report the researchers explained how the lack of institutional support was the most important obstacle to achieve some of the expected results, both by the group and the research team. The institutional response in Madrid was not unique, however, and the national one was diffuse, not conclusive, which added to the difficulty of following a homogeneous path of working with, and offering solutions to youth street groups, which, it may not be forgotten, were composed in no small part by underage members.…”

“…After a period of growth and territorial distribution during the decade of 2000, dominated by the Latin Kings and Ñetas, the groups went to a low profile state due mainly to mano dura and super mano dura policies in the region of Madrid, that involved the illegalization of the groups denominated "Latino gangs" and a strong prosecution from the authorities in cases in which the mere belonging, without any other crime associated, implied possible jail sentences. Even though several social agents, including the university, natural mediation in youth street groups Youth and Globalization 3 (2021) 386-401 developed intervention and mediation plans and projects involving the groups, (Scandroglio & López, 2010), mano dura policies prevailed. From the middle 2010s to the actual moment, we are attending to a "revival" and growth of the groups, being the ones from Dominican origins -ddp s and Trinitariosthe most prominent ones.…”
