Invertible piecewise linear approximations for color reproduction

Abstract: We consider the use of linear splines with variable knots for the approximation of unknown functions from data, motivated by control and estimation problems arising in color systems management. Unlike most popular nonlinear-in-parameters representations, piecewise linear (PL) functions can be simply inverted in a closed form. For the one-dimensional case, we present a study comparing PL and neural network (NN) approximations for several function families. Preliminary results suggest that PL, in addition to the… Show more

“…Another approach would be to simplify a big sets of vertices by getting rid of the redundant vertices. Such an approach can be found in literature [5], but it's hard to practically implement it in the considered case, because it would strongly lengthen the process of constructing the simplicial approximations by measurements or computation.…”

“…Another possibility which can be applied in the model is application of higher-order polynomial interpolation which is also extensively employed in FEA [29]. However that would lead to loss of local invertibility of approximations / k k A A f f − which is the basis of the proposed approach [P. I] [19].…”

“…That is, a change in a single parameter affects only a limited area of the domain. The graph intersection algorithm, our proposed method for computing PL approximations for one dimensional functions, takes advantage of this structure [3]. A single iteration of the graph intersection algorithm consists of two steps.…”
