Inverted Y chromosome polymorphism in the Gujerati Muslim Indian population of South Africa

Abstract: An inverted Y chromosome has been found at a very high frequency in a Muslim Indian community living in the Johannesburg-Witwatersrand area of the Transvaal Province of South Africa: 8 of 141 (5.7%) retrospectively identified Indian males had an inv(Y)(p11.2q11.23) and all were of the Muslim faith. The inversion was found in 22 of 72 (30.5%) prospectively studied normal Muslim Indian males. All the carriers of the inversion were Gujarati-speakers whose families migrated to the Transvaal from the Gujerat Provin… Show more

“…This Y chromosomal rearrangement reminds to the occurrence of a similiar inversion event in the Y chromosome of the Gujerati Muslim Indian population in South Africa (Bernstein et al, 1986). Although there are not yet any molecular experiments supporting this view, it can be assumed that both Y rearrangments are probably based on the similar sequence structure of proximal Yp and the distal AZFb region in Yq11.…”

“…The incidence of inverted Y chromosome in general population is 0.6-1 per 1,000 male births. No evidence existed regarding inverted Y (pl 1.2ql 1.23)chromosome associated with reproductive disadvantage and any phenotypic expression (Bernstein et al, 1986). However, in the case under study, ambiguous external genitalia and hypospadias might be due to mosaicism with 45,X cell line and correlates with previous report (Yanagisawa, 1980).…”

“…An in verted Y chromosome was found at very high frequency (30.5%) in a Muslim Indian com munity living in the Johannesburg-Witwatersrand area of South Africa [1]. The high fre quency of the inv(Y) was presumed to have resulted from random genetic drift in a reproductively isolated community, main tained by strict endogamous marriage cus toms.…”

“…Inverted Y [inv(Y)] chromosomes have been observed in various cytogenetic popula tion studies [reviewed in 1], with an estimated incidence of 0.6 per 1,000 males [1]. An in verted Y chromosome was found at very high frequency (30.5%) in a Muslim Indian com munity living in the Johannesburg-Witwatersrand area of South Africa [1].…”
