Invertebrates in the diet of collared flycatcher (Ficedula albicollis) nestlings in transformed forest ecosystems of north-eastern Ukraine

Abstract: The diet composition of collared flycatcher nestlings, Ficedula albicollis (Temminck, 1815), in the transformed forests of northeastern Ukraine was investigated to present an argument for conservation management actions that could benefit the species. Food pellets were collected from nestlings in four study sites with differing levels of recreational disturbance over 10 breeding seasons. The invertebrates they contained were identified, divided into trophic groups and compared across sites. A total of 1,160 fo… Show more

“…The diet of the bank swallow consists mainly of Diptera (68% of fecal samples—mainly Chironomidae, much less Anthomyiidae, Dolichopodidae, and Sphaeroceridae), Coleoptera (36%), Hymenoptera (14%), Hemiptera (12%), and Lepidoptera (9%) [ 14 ]. The diet of the fifth species included in this study, the collared flycatcher [ Ficedula albicollis (Temminck, 1815)], consists of Diptera, Coleoptera (23% each), Arachnida (14%), Lepidoptera (13%), and Hymenoptera (12%)—these data apply to nestlings [ 15 ]. Similar data were reported in other studies examining collared flycatcher nestlings [ 16 ], but data from adults are unavailable.…”
