Invertebrate Species Inventories in Protected Area Management: Are They Useful?

Abstract: Inventories of invertebrate species are produced by a number of workers for protected areas in South Africa. The value of these inventories for the protected area management process was investigated using a questionnaire to protected area managers, and by examining a sample of published inventories. The questionnaire results indicate that species inventories are sought after, but that they are largely not used in the management process. Invertebrate species inventories have the potential to be useful in severa… Show more

“…Among the invertebrates, several insects have been used as indicators of degradation of terrestrial ecosystems by their ability to develop even in small fragmented areas, where larger vertebrates do not occur (GARDNER et al, 2008;ENGELBRECHT, 2010). These insect species use specific resources and respond quickly to environmental changes (LEWINSOHN et al, 2005).…”

“…To determine the species present in a PA is essential for the development of a red data list for the arachnids of South Africa and to assist with decisions on how to successfully conserve the arachnid diversity. Species inventories are critical for effective PA management and are generally considered to be important by PA managers (Engelbrecht, 2010), specialist taxon scientists and ecologists. Most of the provincial conservation agencies need this type of diversity data for planning.…”

“…To evaluate the efficiency of these new reforested areas in the recovery of environmental quality, the use of species as bioindicators has proved to be a very effective tool (Edge 2005, Uys et al 2006, Engelbrecht 2010, McGeoch et al 2011. The sensitivity of some of these species to differences in resources and conditions among different habitats may prevent their occurrence (Dutra & Marco 2015).…”
