Inversion of Nighttime PM2.5 Mass Concentration in Beijing Based on the VIIRS Day-Night Band

Abstract: Abstract:In order to monitor nighttime particular matter (PM) air quality in urban area, a back propagation neural network (BP neural network) inversion model is established, using low-light radiation data from the day/night band (DNB) of the Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS) aboard the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership (S-NPP) satellite. The study focuses on the moonless and cloudless nights in Beijing during March-May 2015. A test is carried out by selecting surface PM 2.5 data from 1… Show more

“…Over the past several decades, industrialization and urbanization have caused serious PM 2.5 pollution in China. PM 2.5 refers to atmospheric particulates with aerodynamic diameters less than 2.5 µm in ambient air [1,2]. Ambient particles can affect air quality and climate by absorbing and scattering solar irradiation [3][4][5][6], and they also have adverse effects on human health.…”

“…Because of the improved performance, VIIRS DNB data have been used in various applications, such as extracting urban areas [23][24][25][26][27], reflecting demographic and socioeconomic conditions [25,[28][29][30][31][32][33], monitoring nocturnal surface air quality [34][35][36], and so on [26,[37][38][39][40][41].…”
