The aim of this study is to investigate how sound absorbing materials like curtains should be modelled in geometrical acoustic (GA) software when hung freely in space. The use of these tools is widespread today. Whatever the scope of the simulation, dealing with textile materials can be particularly challenging as they both absorb and transmit sound, and absorption is dependent on distance of the walls. Therefore, care must be taken to enter properly validated data. Absorption coefficients found in the literature are measured with samples close to wall, and are not suitable when materials are hung freely. The effects of material placement on both absorption and transmission coefficients were therefore investigated using scaled-down physical models of a reverberant chamber and a church. Subsequently, GA models of both spaces were used to demonstrate that simulated results are reliable assuming that absorption and transmission coefficients are correctly determined.

Humans experience their environment in various working, educational and living situations and in concert halls and opera houses. Whether the environment is considered acoustically appropriate or not depends on many factors. The research unit SEACEN is currently working on a coordinated effort to improve the complete signal chain from the numerical modelling, the data acquisition within numerical or real sound fields, the coding and transmission to the electro-acoustic reproduction by binaural technology or by sound field synthesis. A novel approach for the comparative evaluation of real and simulated environments will also enable the evaluation of the plausibility and/or the authenticity of virtual acoustic environments and a contribution to the development of better physical metrics to predict the qualities of concert halls and opera houses. These activities are relevant not only for concert hall acoustics but for acoustic spaces in general. The activities of SEACEN are summarized. The benefit from having these projects coordinated in a consortium is in the connection between all projects through perception studies and knowledge and data transfer between the groups. The commonly used factors in ISO 3382-like applications in classical room acoustics for concert hall design and consulting will be re-visited, and an extended parameter set will lead to progress in coding and reproduction of 3D sound fields in general. It is hoped that in the end room acoustics and audio engineering will benefit from this cooperation.

The materials of surfaces in a room play an important room in shaping the auditory experience within them. Different materials absorb energy at different levels. The level of absorption also varies across frequencies. This paper investigates how cues from a measured impulse response in the room can be exploited by machines to detect the materials present. With this motivation, this paper proposes a method for estimating the probability of presence of 10 material categories, based on their frequency-dependent absorption characteristics. The method is based on a CNN-RNN, trained as a multi-task classifier. The network is trained using a priori knowledge about the absorption characteristics of materials from the literature. In the experiments shown, the network is tested on over 5,00 impulse responses and 167 materials. The F1 score of the detections was 98%, with an even precision and recall. The method finds direct applications in architectural acoustics and in creating more parsimonious models for acoustic reflections.
