Inverse problems of combined photoacoustic and optical coherence tomography

Abstract: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) and photoacoustic tomography are emerging non‐invasive biological and medical imaging techniques. It is a recent trend in experimental science to design experiments that perform photoacoustic tomography and OCT imaging at once. In this paper, we present a mathematical model describing the dual experiment. Because OCT is mathematically modelled by Maxwell's equations or some simplifications of it, whereas the light propagation in quantitative photoacoustics is modelled by (sim… Show more

“…To develop the score we used techniques of fuzzy set theory, a mathematical concept to depict the biology of physiological processes [14,15]. It was created in 1964 and successfully implemented in biology, artificial intelligence, and linguistics [14,16,17]. Unlike conventional mathematics, which does not allow vague expressions and demands that an object either is a member of a set or not, fuzzy sets are defined by a function (μ) assigning a value between 0.00 and 1.00 to an observation, representing the degree of belonging to a fuzzy set.…”

“…The real part describes how the medium reflects the light and the imaginary part (wavelength dependent) determines how the light absorbs in the medium. In [5,7] we considered the multimodal PAT/OCT system, meaning that we had additional internal data from PAT, in order to recover both parts of the refractive index. Here, the multi-layer structure allows us to derive an iterative method that requires only OCT data.…”

“…In order to derive the above formula we have to consider the interaction of the medium with the incoming electromagnetic wave locally. For a derivation, using microscopic Maxwell's equations, see for instance [11,Section 4].…”
