Inverse Perovskites (Eu3O)E with E = Sn, In – Preparation, Crystal Structures and Physical Properties

Abstract: The cubic inverse Perovskites (Eu 3 O)In and (Eu 3 O)Sn were prepared from the metals and Eu 2 O 3 or SnO 2 , respectively. For (Eu 3 O)In the crystal structure analysis was performed on single crystal X-ray diffraction data (space group Pm3m, a ϭ 512.79(3) pm, Z ϭ 1, R gt (F) ϭ 0.022, wR(F 2 ) ϭ 0.044). The data indicated full occupancy on all sites and a fully ordered structure. According to magnetic susceptibility measurements and X-ray absorption spectroscopic data at the Eu L III edge both compounds conta… Show more

“…The cubic unit cell of the only previously known nitride (Nd 3 N)Sn is even larger than that derived for (Nd 3 C)Sn [16]. Except for (Yb 3 O)Sn the only previously reported inverse perovskite oxide is (Eu 3 O)Sn [26,31].…”

“…Structural investigations of the inverse perovskites containing oxygen and tetrel elements, M 3 TtO (M = Ca, Sr, Ba, Eu, Yb; Tt = Si, Ge, Sn, Pb), have been reported by Widera & Schä fer (1980, 1981M 3 SnO and M 3 PbO), 1 Rö hr (1995; Ca 3 GeO), Huang & Corbett (1998;Eu 3 SiO, Eu 3 GeO, Ca 3 SiO) and Kirchner et al (2006;Eu 3 SnO). More systematic structural investigations of the complete series were reported by Tü rck (1994) and Velden & Jansen (2004), mostly based on powder diffraction studies.…”

“…The corresponding oxide (Eu 3 O)Sn is known to contain exclusively divalent europium. [74] Perovskite nitrides of tin with rare-earth metal constituents in stable trivalent states (R 3 N)Sn, however, present preferably full occupation of the nitrogen site and metallic behavior. [14] For (Ca 2 EuN 0.75 )Sn all characterization techniques univocally point at a cubic Perovskite type crystal structure with defects on the nitrogen site and statistical distribution of Ca/Eu.…”
