Inverse functionalism and the individuation of powers

Abstract: Let a basic physical property be any simple, unrealized property that features in the laws of ideal completed physics.1 Perhaps electric charge and mass-energy are such properties.Proponents of powers ontologies 2 think that at least some basic physical properties have at least partially causal or dispositional essences. Powers ontologies are motivated by problems with categoricalism, the view that basic physical properties have no non-trivial essential modal character. There are two main categoricalist positi… Show more

“…38 It should be noted that these options are not mutually exclusive: on a powers theory, for instance, semantically functional concepts such as charge pick out fundamental properties as the occupants of the causal roles that individuate them. For more on the relational individuation of fundamental properties, see Yates (2018). 39 Schwitzgebel (2019) argues for a Kantian phenomenological conception of Matrix spacetime based on simple phenomenal role functionalism about spacetime.…”

“…If one takes essences to be identical with the causal relations that necessarily characterize a property, the critique loses its force. Yates (2018) has argued that the way out of Lowe's difficulty is to have one kind of property in play to anchor a different kind of property. This is the lesson of functionalism, where complex mental properties are individuated thanks to physical properties that lie outside of the causal structure that individuates complex mental properties.…”
