Bisphenols, particularly bisphenol A (4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene)-diphenol) (BPA), are suspected of inducing oxidative stress in humans, which may be associated with adverse health outcomes. We investigated the associations between exposure to bisphenols and biomarkers of oxidative stress in human studies over the last 12 years (2008‒2019) related to six health endpoints and evaluated their suitability as effect biomarkers. PubMed database searches identified 27 relevant articles that were used for data extraction. In all studies, BPA exposure was reported, whereas some studies also reported other bisphenols. More than a dozen different biomarkers were measured. The most frequently measured biomarkers were 8-oxo-7,8-dihydro-2′-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG), 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α (8-isoprostane) and malondialdehyde (MDA), which almost always were positively associated with BPA. Methodological issues were reported for MDA, mainly the need to handle samples with caution to avoid artefact formation and its measurements using a chromatographic step to distinguish it from similar aldehydes, making some of the MDA results less reliable. Urinary 8-OHdG and 8-isoprostane can be considered the most reliable biomarkers of oxidative stress associated with BPA exposure. Although none of the biomarkers are considered BPA- or organ-specific, the biomarkers can be assessed repeatedly and non-invasively in urine and could help to understand causal relationships.

Phthalates (PAEs) are synthetic chemicals widely used in industrial and personal consumer products as adhesives or plasticizers. PAEs have been demonstrated to have toxic effects on the human body. However, biological monitoring data for the internal PAE exposure levels of Chinese rural residents are still limited. The present study investigated the exposure levels of ten phthalate metabolites (mPAEs) of rural residents in Northwest China. The results showed that mPAEs were wildly prevalent in urine and the geometric mean concentration of Σ10mPAEs was 957.02 ng mL–1 (adjusted by specific gravity). Mono-n-butyl phthalate (MBP) and metabolites of di(2-ethylhexyl)-phthalate (DEHP) were the most dominant mPAEs in urine, with specific gravity adjusted median concentrations of 174.67 and 156.30 ng mL–1, respectively. Urinary concentrations of mPAEs were significantly associated with age, body mass index and economic level (p < 0.05). By calculating the percentage and relative conversion rate of DEHP metabolites, it was found that the degree of oxidative metabolism of DEHP in children was significantly higher than that in adults (p < 0.05), indicating that the pathway and degree of DEHP oxidation were age-related. The risk assessment showed that 59.12% of rural residents may have a noncancer risk from PAE exposure. This study provides important basis for assessing the occurrence and exposure of urinary phthalate metabolites among rural residents in China.

The Comparison of Pro-Oxidant-Antioxidant Balance in Physiologic and Pathologic Jaundice

Background: Jaundice can be observed in two-thirds of infants. Bilirubin prevents damage to the DNA from the oxidative stress of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Moreover, bilirubin has anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic roles in addition to antioxidant properties. Objectives: We decided to compare pro-oxidant-antioxidant balance (PAB) in physiologic and pathologic jaundice. Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated 171 infants more than 35 weeks of gestational and > 2 days of postnatal age who were admitted to the Ghaem Hospital with jaundice from 2017 to 2019. Infants with bilirubin levels less or equal to 14 mg/dL on the jaundice meter were put in the physiologic jaundice group and infants with bilirubin higher than 15 mg/dL on the jaundice meter were entered into the study as the pathologic jaundice group. A questionnaire containing data regarding neonate's characteristics and the mother's medical history was filled out for each infant. Bilirubin levels, hematocrit, direct and or indirect Combs, reticulocytes, and PAB were evaluated in the case group. Results: The average age of the enrolled neonates was 7.3 ± 4.11 days and 52.4% of them were male. Between two groups of physiologic and pathologic jaundice, gestational age (P = 0.010), parity (P = 0.001) and PAB (P = 0.000) were significantly different. Overall, the amounts of the mentioned parameters in the pathologic jaundice group were less than the physiologic jaundice group. Conclusions: A pathological increase in bilirubin levels irrespective of its neurotoxic properties can change the pro-oxidantantioxidant balance in favor of antioxidants. It seems that neurotoxic mechanism of bilirubin in pathological amounts differ with its antioxidant effects.
