Inventory of the Seaweeds and Seagrasses of the Hawaiian Islands

Abstract: This updated list is composed of a total of 661 records, which includes 71 brown algae, 450 red algae, 137 green algae, and three seagrasses, with an overall rate of endemism of 13.2%. Almost half (46.7%) of the Hawaiian records presented here are represented by at least one DNA sequence, while 16.3% are confirmed through a DNA sequence match to a topotype, and 6.7% are confirmed through a DNA sequence match to a type specimen. The data are presented in the context of the natural history of the Hawaiian Island… Show more

“…Some of the seaweeds were identified in situ based on morphological criteria. Phenotypic characteristics of the samples were determined and examined using available literature (Dumilag,[9], Dumilag and Javier, [9], Sherwood and Guiry, [15] to identify samples down to species level. The books of Calumpong [16] and Trono [2] were also used for identification and authentication.…”

“…Limu, the Hawaiian word for seaweed, was a crucial component not only in fishponds but also in the coastline ecosystems. An estimated 578 marine algae species are present in Hawaii as of 2,003, 80 of which are endemic to the area (Sherwood & Guiry, 2023). Limu has many uses in Hawaiian culture and is a fundamental component of many marine ecosystems.…”

“…These subtropical reefs are often dominated by macroalgae, in contrast to the mostly coral‐dominated tropical reefs (Bruno et al, 2014; Vroom & Braun, 2010). The Hawaiian Archipelago, including PMNM, supports approximately 658 macroalgal species of Rhodophyta, Chlorophyta, and Phaeophyceae (Huisman et al, 2007; Sherwood & Guiry, 2023).…”
